Online Lessons for Young Learners
Cambridge offers online classes for young learners from the age of 4. The classes are designed around weekly themes that introduce interesting topics and ideas. As we learn a new topic, we introduce new vocabulary through a variety of means using stories, e-books, videos, songs and interactive games. The teacher will also use the new vocabulary in conversation so the child can understand based on context. Phonics is also introduced so that children learn to spell and read words. The letter sounds for phonics are taught in a multi-sensory way, including through songs, stories, and gestures to make it easier for children to remember each letter sound.
The teacher will cater and adjust the lesson content based on the child’s interests and reaction. For example, if the child is interested in drawing, there will be drawing activities, such as drawing a picture of newly learned vocabulary incorporated in the lesson. If the child is interested in puzzles, there will be puzzle activities incorporated as well.
Children learn to interact through communication as they engage in various tasks and seek explanation and understanding. By planning experiences that actively engage children in communication, we can enrich the complex and amazing process of language development. Children will have varied opportunities to become familiar with language through books, songs, rhymes, games, and tasks; these allow the child to interact and respond to stories and images and provide opportunity for language acquisition. They further develop competence in verbal communication by responding to questions as well as describing things and events.
